2006 F1 Round 17 of 18: Japan (Suzuka)

Highlights: last F1 race at Suzuka (next year the Japanese race will be held at Fuji); Schumacher and Alonso neck and neck in the driver’s championship points standings going into this race; Renault leading Ferrari by 1 point in the constructor’s championship; the Ferraris qualifying 1 and 2, the Renaults qualifying in 5 and 6 (with Toytas between them and the Ferraris); the Ferraris of Schumacher and Massa off well at the start…though Alonso was keeping them in sight; Schumacher’s dramatic and surprising engine blow up at lap 37 (last time he retired due to mechanical issues was France in 2000); Alonso wins. This has been one of the best, most vigorously contested seasons in recent memory. Great stuff.

Race result:

1. Alonso (Renault)
2. Massa (Ferrari)
3. Fisichella (Renault)

Alonso now leads Schumacher by 10 in the driver’s championship 126 to 116 points, with 1 race to go (the only chance for Schumacher to win the championship is for Alonso to not finish in Brazil and Schumacher to win; he’d take it in a tie breaker with more wins at that point than Alonso). In the constructor’s championship, Renault now extends their lead over Ferrari to 9 (195 to 186).

Next up: Brazilian Grand Prix, 22-Oct, 11:30 AM CST pre-race live on SpeedTV.
