“Owning a Ferrari is like dating a super-model with syphilis”
I recently met a consummate car-guy who’s had the good fortune of owning over seven Ferraris (obviously, he’s friend of a friend, since my circle of friends is more likely to be proud of owning a string of Hondas…).
He’s also very active in the Ferrari community and seemed to be the kind of passionate Tifoso you’d expect behind the wheel of such exotic machinery. So, it was with great surprise that I learned that this certified Ferrari nut was currently driving a Lamborghini Gallardo. (???!!!)
When I asked what prompted the switch of loyalties, he explained that Audi’s ownership of Lamborghini had imbued the car with a combination of Italian passion and Teutonic precision - maybe an optimal balance between the right and left hemispheres.
And, he followed this up with a priceless quote that spoke volumes about the switch: “…and because owning a Ferrari is like dating a super-model with syphilis.”
(I just knew I had to write that one down and share it).
Disappointed by Apple WWDC 2006 Keynote
I’ll admit to being drawn in by the build-up of hype leading up to today’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference keynote. While some of the features highlighted during the Mac OS X Leopard Sneak Peek were interesting as was the MacPro, I was expecting at least “one more thing.”Sure, what was discussed today was totally in line with the conference (it is a developers’ conference, after all), but time and time again, Apple has managed to ’surprise.’
I was looking forward to applying a few of the Apple gift cards burning a hole in my pocket toward some new, exciting stuff from the folks from Cupertino. Maybe there’ll be something new before the holidays.
Additionally, while some competitive ribbing is generally expected, Apple seems overly focused on Vista and some of the WWDC banners / slogans are a bit sophomoric and smug. One thing I’ve learned is to run your own race and let your product shine on its own merits, not in its purported superiority over the competition.
BMW drops “Ultimate Driving Machine” tagline
Autoblog (source: Advertising Age) reports that BMW is dropping their timeless tagline “The Ultimate Driving Machine” and replacing it with “A Company of Ideas.”
I’m all for progress and updates and change, but only in cases when the ‘new’ is markedly better than the ‘old.’ In this case, I don’t think that’s true. “The Ultimate Driving Machine” perfectly summed up the essence of what BMW meant to me (and many other auto enthusiasts) and what kept me an interested and a passionate fan.
Whether or not you warmed to the styling or other design elements, you always knew what to expect when you got behind the wheel.
“A Company of Ideas”? Are they still going to be making cars?

2006 F1 Round 13 of 18: Hungary (Hungaroring)

Schumacher put them both near mid-pack on the starting grid; Kubica replacing Villeneuve for his GP debut as a first-time Polish driver in a GP; rain during the race showcasing the talents of a few in the wet; Alonso and Schumacher slicing up through the grid at the start; Alonso’s pass of Schumacher in the wet on the outside of a turn; Alonso’s right rear wheel coming loose (not tightened after last pit stop) and knocking him out of the race at about 20 laps to the end; M. Schumacher out with about 2 laps to go; Button wins his first race…..great stuff.Alonso’s lead over Schumacher is 10: 100 to 90 and Renault is still ahead of Ferrari in the constructor’s championship: 149 to 142.
Race result:
1. Button (Honda)
2. de la Rosa (McLaren-Mercedes)
