Remembrance of Things Past
As a voracious consumer of information related to Rush, I recently polished off Jon Collins’ “Rush: Chemistry: The Definitive Biography.” What made this even more fun was that I created an iPod playlist of all of the Rush studio albums in chronological order, so that I could listen to each album as I read about it in the book.
I’ve said before that Rush is the soundtrack for many moments in my life, and I was amazed at how many memories flowed back as I listed through the songs - many of which I haven’t heard in some time. Show Don’t Tell off of Preso conjured up the smells of fresh paint and the pride of first-time home-ownership, as Presto was the album I kept playing over and over as I painted my newly-purchased townhouse during Thanksgiving of 1989.
Winter Frosting
There was a very fine fog this morning that deposited a thin layer of frost on everything - the trees are especially gorgeous. (I have a few more pictures at my ‘Winter Frosting’ Flickr set).

Why I love the Midwest…

Where else can you go from temps in the upper 40’s to a 9″-10″ snowfall in the space of a couple of days? I woke up to a winter wonderland this morning. Mother Nature was nice enough to hold off dumping on us until a Friday evening - knowing that Saturday mornings are generally pretty lazy and you don’t have to ‘be someplace.’I spent a few hours this morning snow-blowing the driveway and sidewalks and just reveled in how beautiful everything looked. Lupita took the girls over to retention area (a grassy knoll nearby with some great slopes) for sledding and full was had by all.
People generally tend to dream of warmer climes at times like this - not me. I love experiencing each season.
All packed and ready for ‘the fire’
Near the beginning of each new year I typically do a number of ‘annual maintenance’ tasks like cleaning up file cabinets, shredding old bills and receipts…and replacing smoke detector batteries.
I drag a chair around to each of the three detectors we have in the house and follow the same procedure: climb up on the chair; test the current operation of the detector (which emits the requisite loud shriek); pull the detector off the ceiling (they’re wired to the house current in addition to being battery powered) and replace the battery; re-mount; then test again (another loud annoying shriek).
Throughout all of this, Annie our 4 year old, seemed a little disturbed. We know she’s already not a huge fan of loud noises, but she had an additional look of very deep concern on her face.
That night, Lupita nearly tripped over a few things in Annie’s doorway as she was tucking her in to bed. “What are these things doing near your door?” Lupita asked Annie.
“It’s my important stuff for when we need to leave for the fire.”
She had packed up her little backpack and overnight bags with her “important stuff” so that she was ready for “when the fire came”. And, she had placed them strategically near the door so she could pick them up as she was rushing out.
…daddy needed to do some explaining…
Poland: Summer, 1971

My brother George, who has been scanning shoeboxes full of old pics over time, frequently sends me some good ones. This one came in yesterday. It’s a picture of the both of us (George at far left and me next to him) with a few of our cousins outside my grandparents’ house in Greboszów. We visited our family in the ‘old country’ during our summer vacation. Summer of 1971 would make me 7 years old - as old as Emily, our middle daughter, is right now.
I cropped the picture just so, so that George’s black socks were visible (I won’t say whether or not I was wearing them too).
