The sad end of the Berghoff era

I just heard on the local late news tonight that The Berghoff is closing its doors on February 28, 2006.

Having enjoyed many great meals there with good friends over many years, I’m sad to see it go. I’ll have to try to make it in during the next two months for some Wiener Schnitzel and a Berghoff dark (even thought it’ll probably be packed every day).

Blockbuster Date Night: The Island

After a long absence, I swung by Blockbuster to see if there were any interesting movies available. Since Lupita was out Friday evening (a few hours of Creative Memories scrapbooking in the neighborhood ), I had a little more latitude in my selection and looked forward to a quiet evening of ‘guy movie’.

I picked up The Island (I recall having been intrigued by the ads for it a while back) and enjoyed it – decent story, good action – although it was a bit of stretch for it to be set in 2019. I didn’t think it would have been Lupita’s cup of tea; but she watched it today and enjoyed it as well.

Currently reading: The World is Flat

A couple of months ago over dinner, a friend strongly recommended “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century” by Thomas L. Friedman.

As I’ve been doing recently for a number of books, I placed a hold on a copy of the book at the local library (no need to spend $$ at Amazon for something that’ll just ultimately end up in a box in the basement.)

The hold finally came in today… looking forward to diving into it.

Functional Sculpture

I was walking down Michigan Avenue today and saw this wonderful bike rack. It’s not your usual bike rack – the typical, non-descript metal bars banded together to form a place to support and secure your bike – no, this one’s a functional sculpture. Its form advertises its function in such a playful and direct way and you can just feel that someone enjoyed creating it. Each of the ‘handlebars’ has a slightly different design and the wheels are all canted at slightly different angles.

Good simple design like this never fails to put a smile on my face.
