2005 F1 Round 13 of 19: Hungary (Hungaroring)

Another interesting race (typical of this season over the last few). Schumacher back in form - getting pole position and coming in second; Räikkönen with a great drive and finally being rewarded with a win; Montoya putting in a great effort but retiring early with mechanical problems (greabox); Alonso getting caught in a scuffle early in the race and coming in out of the points (11th); Coulthard hitting Alonso’s front wing debris and having his front suspension shatter spectacularly…And…I love the SpeedTV commentary by Varsha, Hobbs, and Matchett - I find myself laughing out loud after some of Hobbs’ quips (much better than the occasional CBS coverage crap).

Result: Räikkönen, M. Schumacher, R. Schumacher.

Next up: Turkey on 21-Aug (6:30 AM CT pre-race on SpeedTV).

2005 F1 Round 12 of 19: Germany (Hockenheim)

After leading most of the race, Räikkönen went out with mechanical problems (gearbox) mid-way - amazing drive by his team mate, Juan Pablo Montoya, who spun on his qualifying lap, started from the rear, and ended up second.

Result: Alonso (center), Montoya (left), and Button (right). Alonso leads in points with 87 - Räikkönen in second with 51.

Next up…. Hungary, 31-Jul (live on SpeedTV @ 6:30 AM CT).

Juan Epstein’s long-lost cousin…

News Flash! Juan Epstein’s long-lost cousin from Poland has finally been found!!!

If you don’t know who Juan Epstein is, I guess it just means I’m getting too old and that my feeble attempt at humor is lost on you….see ‘Welcome Back Kotter’ (…wow, Kotter was 30 years ago….)

I recently ran across my high school IDs and thought I’d embarass myself with a few shots of “the ‘fro” (and yes, that’s all ‘natural’, no perms involved…..ever). From left to right: Freshman and Sophomore years at St. Pat’s and Junior and Senior years at Conant. (Man, I just noticed that I wore the same shirt in the Freshman and Sophomore pics… I guess I must have thought it looked cool or something).

You can enjoy full shots of the IDs after the jump.

Blockbuster Date Night: Constantine

Since it was released on DVD this past week, I had a curiosity about ‘Constantine’ - but, didn’t think Lupita would want to see it.

We both enjoyed it enough to watch it a second time to pick up bits and pieces we had missed during the first watch a day earlier. I never read the Hellblazer comics on which this is based, so I don’t know how faithful it is to that.

Harry Potter Fan

My Harry Potter fanatic

Allison, our 8 (”almost 9″) year old is a huge Harry Potter fan. While she was eagerly awaiting the release of the next book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she re-read all of the previous Potter books.

As a surprise, we ordered the book through Amazon for delivery on the day of release. It came with the mail on Saturday, and Al was already 3/4 done with it on Sunday afternoon. (Dad is proud that she loves to read all on her own.)

Blockbuster Date Night: Double-Feature

Took the typical stroll along the recent release wall at the local Blockbuster and picked up Hitch and Closer.

Hitch was exactly what we expected - a light, entertaining feel-good movie with a few laughs (we weren’t expecting high-drama).

With Closer, on the other hand, I was curious about all the critical acclaim / press it got a while back and expected something more. Total waste of time - it left us both depressed and relieved/thankful that our lives are reasonably normal.

Everyone needs to be fed sometimes…

In my continuous quest to seem ‘cool’ and ‘hip’ and to delude myself into thinking I’m some fringe member of the technorati, I too have enabled a feed from my little journal here. Everyone else seems to be doing it - so, I didn’t want to feel left out or left behind.

So, for the two people out there who occasionally come to see if I’ve added anything here, you can now add my feeds (one for this page and one for our flickr photo library). So, now you’ll have a high-tech way of finding out that I update stuff quite infrequently.

I feel so cool too that I’m able to put that little orange XML button somewhere on my pages (I liked all of the various RSS and Atom buttons too, but I wasn’t so sure about what they really meant, so I decided not to use them).

Here you are:

2005 F1 Round 11 of 19: Silverstone (Britain)

Another great race….McLaren-Mercedes and Renault in the top four spots: Montoya, Alonso, Räikkönen, and Fisichella. Renault would have had two on the podium, but Fisichella’s stall in the pits allowed Räikkönen to get past (Flavio’s probably none too pleased) - and, not bad for Räikkönen, who started from 12th (after taking a 10 position grid penalty for an engine change).

Next up…Germany at Hockenheim - 24-July.

Blockbuster Date Night: The Life Aquatic

With three kids, Lupita and I “don’t get out much” - I really don’t remember the last time we went to see a movie alone together.

So, the next best thing is a quick visit to the local Blockbuster to see what catches my eye. We put the kids to bed and then, voila! date night at the movies in the comfort of our own home.

Tonight, the find was The Life Aquatic - with Bill Murray and a cast of other notables. Entertaining, if a bit quirky and weird.

The soundtrack is amazing - nothing like Brazilian-acoustic versions of old David Bowie songs (by “by Brazilian troubadour/film costar Seu Jorge”) - great stuff.

2005 F1 Round 10 of 19: France

Pretty uneventful race after the debacle at Indy. Alonso, Räikkönen, and M. Schumacher. It was nice to see a win for Renault on home soil (note the sea of blue and yellow - Renault colors - in the stands).

Next up, Silverstone (Britain) next week, 10-Jul-2005 (pre-race @ 6:30 AM CST on SpeedTV).
