2008 F1: Round 18 of 18: Brazil

Incredible.

The championship came down to the final corner of the final lap of the final race of the season. With McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton 7 points ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, Hamilton needed to finish 5th or better if Massa came in first.

Rain played an important part in the beginning of the race and at the end.

Starting from pole and leading comfortably throughout the race, Massa crossed the finish line to win. Prior to the final corner, Hamilton was in 6th place behind Toyota’s Timo Glock, who was still on dry tires during the rain in the final laps. In this order, the drivers’ championship was Massa’s. Into the final corner, Hamilton passed Glock who was having considerable difficulty on dry tires in the rain.

Championship to Hamilton. Incredible.

Massa took solace in the fact that he and teammate Räikkönen clinched the constructor’s championship for Ferrari.
